History
- Miami Shores/Barry
University Charter School opened in 1997 as the first university connected
charter school in the state.
- The Miami Shores/Barry
University charter School was the first charter school in Miami-Dade County
to be awarded a fifteen-year contract.
- Parents of the Miami
Shores/Barry University Charter School have traditionally contributed more
than 5000 hours of volunteer service a year.
- During the 2002-2003
school the Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School was the number one
school in M-DCPS for attendance, with 97%
average daily attendance for the year.
- The MS/BU Charter School
was rated an “A” school for two consecutive school years: 2001-2002 and
2002-2003.
Students
- Students who attend the
Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School are chosen through a lottery.
Siblings of current students and applicants who live within a 4 mile radius
are given priority.
- Students are expected to
maintain good attendance. Our students have traditionally maintained one of
the highest attendance records in M-DCPS with 97% being the average monthly
attendance.
- Students are expected to
accrue 25 community service hours per year.
Each of our 180 students completes a service-learning project by the
end of the 8th grade-75 community service hours.
- Students who attend the
Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School enjoy a wide variety of
extra-curricular activities such as: intramural basketball, dance team,
swimming team, tennis team, track and field team, Young Author’s Club,
Chess Club, Year Book Club, and Student Government.
- Students who attend the
Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School are expected to maintain a
passing grade of “C” or higher academically and no lower than a “B”
in conduct for each subject, each nine
weeks.
- ESE students who attend
the Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School are educated with the
general student population and attend a Learning Strategies Class for 2
hours each week.
- Charter School students
who are in the Gifted/Academic Excellence Program are scheduled in the
Gifted Resource room one day per week.
- Charter School students
are expected to participate in academic competitions and contests.
- Charter School students
who are struggling academically are expected to attend the after-school
study program and the Academic Summer Camp.
Parents
- Parents of the Miami
Shores/Barry University Charter School are expected to volunteer a minimum
of 25 hours per year. Additionally, parents may accrue volunteer hours by
purchasing needed supplies and materials for the charter school.
- Parents of the Miami
Shores/Barry University Charter School are expected to join the PTSA, attend
Open House and attend all parent/teacher/student/administrative conferences.
- Parents, as well as
students, are expected to uphold the rules delineated by the Miami
Shores/Barry University Charter School Student/Parent Contract.
